3D Butterfly Pavement Art by Julian Beever

3D Butterfly Pavement Art by Julian Beever

I recently came across some amazing photos of art created by English artist Julian Beever.

The butterfly above was drawn on a sidewalk in Mexico City. The artist draws anamorphic illusions “in a special distortion in order to create an impression of 3 dimensions when seen from one particular viewpoint.” See more of Julian’s stunning work at his website.

Knit baby afghan in country blue

Knit baby afghan in country blue

I knit this country blue baby blanket for a close friend who wanted to avoid baby blue for her baby boy.

I didn’t use a pattern, just counted stitches and measured every once in a while. Overall size is about 36″ by 24″.

The border is garter stitch and the inside is stockinette. A very simple project. I used Caron Simply Soft yarn and the blanket is wonderfully soft and cozy.

This is one of the largest projects I’ve knitted (I usually crochet blankets/afghans).

Check out this lovely piece of Yoshi fan art I found at DeviantArt.com. The overall picture is so cute but I particularly love how the artist rendered the eyes. Amazing.

Kokeshi Doll Amigurumi (Crochet)

Kokeshi Doll Amigurumi (Crochet)

I crocheted this Kokeshi Doll amigurumi for my niece from a pattern created by Michelle McLaughlin (available for free at her site Suncatcher Eyes).

The pattern calls for mostly single and half-double crochet stitches. In my case, the embroidery is simple straight stitches.

I used Caron Simply Soft yarn for the body, face and hair and standard embroidery floss for the embroidered accents. This was one of my first crocheted amigurumi and it was a quick project that looks quite cute!

Here’s a definition of Kokeshi dolls from Wikipedia:
“Kokeshi (???, kokeshi?), are Japanese dolls, originally from northern Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body has a floral design painted in red, black, and sometimes yellow, and covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. The bottom is marked with the signature of the artist.”

Did you know…
…there are no penguins in the Northern Hemisphere? (except in captivity)
…there are at least 17 kinds of penguins?
…only 2 kinds of penguins (Adelies and Emperors) live in cold areas all year long? The Galapagos penguin lives near the equator!
…penguin bodies are built for swimming fast? A penguin’s normal swimming speed is 15 miles per hour (4 times faster than a human swimmer).
